  • My predictions for Tuesday’s testimony by Attorney General Jeff Sessions …

Q:           Mr. Sessions, do you recall a meeting in the Oval Office on February 14, 2017?

    A:            Yes.

Q:           With you at that time were the President, Mr. Comey, the Vice President, and Jared Kushner, correct?

    A:            Yes.

Q:           When the meeting ended, Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey to stay while the others, including you, left the room, correct?

A:            That is correct. He’s the President of the United States. He’s allowed to have anyone with him that he chooses, whenever he chooses. He won a landslide election in the Electoral College.

Q:          When Mr. Trump asked that the room be cleared, other than for Mr. Comey, you lingered nonetheless, correct?

    A:            Yes.

Q:           Because you knew it would be wrong to leave Mr. Comey alone with Mr. Trump, given that Mr. Comey worked under you.

A:            No, that would not be wrong. The President of the United States can talk to anyone he wants to, with or without others present.

Q:           Still, even after his instructions for the rest of you to clear out, you lingered, didn’t you?

    A:            Well, I guess so.

Q:           Then he ordered you out of the room, right?

    A:            (No response)

Q:           Mr. Sessions, he told you to leave, right?

A:            In a way. He said “I hoped I could have a private conversation with Mr. Comey,” looking at me, so I left.

Q:           And, as Mr. Comey said, you stood outside the door of the Oval Office, there with the Vice President and Mr. Kushner, correct?

    A:            Correct.

Q:           From where you could not hear what the President said to Mr. Comey or how Mr. Comey responded, correct?

    A:            Well …

Q:           Could you hear their conversation?

    A:            No, not really?

Q:           Could you hear it at all?

    A:            No.

Q:           At one point during that conversation, Mr. Kushner opened the door for a second, stuck his head in, and came out, as Mr. Comey has testified, correct?

    A:            Maybe?

Q:           You didn’t notice him do that?

A:            I was talking to the Vice President.

Q:           What did you say to the Vice President and what did he say to you?

A:            He asked me “What’s going on?” And I said “damned if I know.”

Q:           You were both troubled by the president’s behavior, weren’t you?

A:            He has a right to do whatever he wants.

Q:           Does the president have the right to break the law?

    A:            (No response.)

Q:           You’re the top law enforcement official in the United States. Does a president have the right to break the law?

A:            It’s not breaking a law to express a hope than an investigation comes to a swift conclusion.

Q:           Do the obstruction of justice laws apply to all Americans equally?

A:            What do you mean by “equally”?

Q:           Do the obstruction of justice laws apply to the president?

A:            I suppose so, but remember Clinton’s emails.

    Q:           What?

    A:            Oh, never mind.

Q:           After Mr. Comey’s private meeting with Mr. Trump, did Mr. Comey later ask you never to put him in the position again where he was left alone with Mr. Trump?

    A:            He did.

    Q:           Did you respond?

A:            No, because Mr. Trump is president, and he can have any kind of meeting he wants. Mr. Comey could have resigned immediately as FBI Director if he felt that President Trump had done something wrong.

Q:           In your view, should a foreign government be allowed to interfere in a United States election?

A:            There is no current investigation of Mr. Trump, which Mr. Comey repeated three times.

Q:           Should a foreign government be allowed to interfere in a United States election? Yes or no?

A:            I just answered that. You ask the same question and you’ll get the same answer. Mr. Comey has fully exonerated Mr. Trump. Three times. Anything else is fake news.

Q:           Was it “fake news” that Mr. Trump had a private meeting with your subordinate in the Oval Office, a meeting from which you were expressly excluded?

A:            And anyway, I had recused myself from the Russia thing. So if I was recused, why would I be in that meeting?

Q:           So you knew that Mr. Trump was going to address “the Russia thing,” didn’t you?

    A:            I didn’t say that.

Q:           Mr. Trump was very angry with you when you recused yourself, correct?

A:            I refuse to testify about private conversations that I had with Mr. Trump, who has been fully exonerated already. Three times.

Q:           You considered resigning, given Mr. Trump’s anger, correct?

A:            I have full confidence in our president, who won in a landslide election. And did you see those massive crowds on Inauguration Day? Largest in the history of the world. Of the universe.

Q:           I have many more questions, but I’m out of time.

    Dear Mr. Trump,

Well, it seems you and your colleagues have lied. That doesn’t surprise me. I anticipate you will continue to lie, but I advise you to change your tack.

    Here’s what you should do:

    • Call a press conference and admit that you spoke the words that Director Comey has alleged you said. Honor him as an honest and trustworthy public servant.
    • Admit to the American people that you were wrong to attempt to derail FBI’s investigation of Flynn.
    • Admit to the American people that you were wrong to attempt to end FBI’s investigation of Russian interference in our election.
    • Promise to the American people that you will never again try to influence an FBI investigation.

If you take my advice, sir, I’m sure it will play well with the American public.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

  • Should the White House occupant read what he signs and understand it …?

    Dear Mr. Trump,

I find it mind-boggling that you don’t realize that you, yourself, signed the current effort at a travel ban. You are blaming the Department of Justice? That’s amazing, since you are the head of the Executive Branch of our government, of which the Department of Justice is a part. The did what you told them to do. This tells me again that you do not realizing what you are reading; that you don’t even take the time to read the papers placed before you for your signature.

My advice, sir, is that you stop trying to blame everyone else but yourself. Recognize that the revised travel ban is equally offensive as the first travel ban, in that your animus is against a religion and that you are violating the First Amendment of the United States Constitution by discriminating on the basis of faith.

And, by the way, sir, stop trying to turn Britain’s tragedies to your political advantage. You are callous as well as thoughtless.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

    Dear Mr. Trump,

In the email your office sent to me yesterday, you bragged that you had “kept your promise to put American first” by withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord.

Yes. You have put America first:

    First in untrustworthiness.

    First in dishonor.

    First in deceit.

    First in stupidity.

You must be so proud of yourself, by accomplishing all of these firsts. How can you stand to accomplish so many firsts for America?

I have another first that I pray you will accomplish. The first occupant of the White House to be removed from office by impeachment.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

  • High Crimes and Felonies, sent to the White House today …

    May 31, 2017

    Dear Mr. Trump:

Acting as a Grand Jury, with millions of fellow Americans serving as co-Grand Jurors, I do hereby accuse you of the following High Crime and Felonies:

    1. The Hate Crime of pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords, an act of hate toward all inhabitants of the Earth, present and future, human and non-human

    2. The Hate Crime of depriving 23 million of your fellow citizens of health care coverage, an act of hate against the poor and underprivileged, so that you and your rich cronies can pay fewer dollars in taxes

    3. The Hate Crime of lying to the American electorate in promising to bring back jobs, an act of hate against the gullible and all the others who trusted you were honest

The penalty for such offenses includes going down in history as the worst president this country has ever had, bar none. Because your crimes threaten to end history altogether, you may sadly never endure the full infamy that your crimes merit. It will therefore be your own descendants who suffer from destruction of their world’s climate, from the consequences of your uncaring about other people, and from an awakening of understanding among those who mistakenly put their trust in you.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

    Dear Mr. Trump,

We can see what a thug you are as you belligerently push aside another world leader to step in front of him, as you puff up your stature to try to look important, as that arrogant smirk on your face shows what a strong man you think yourself. It’s so sad that the world’s view of our country is that we elected such a person – no manners, no honest, no intelligence, no compassion, no common sense – to be our president. Sadder still is the fact that you did win the election, yes, clearly with cheating by encouraging and facilitating Russian interference.

My generation will not outlive the shame and harm, and whether my children’s generation will do so is impossible to say. Your behavior continues to create new harms and existential dangers for all of us. One word describes our country’s situation, the result of you and your supporters: pathetic.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

  • Exercise is the thing, Mr. President …

    May 22, 2017
    Uncategorized

    Dear Mr. Trump,

The reports on your current foreign trip are distressing. You look unwell, fatigued, etc. Who knew that being president could be so demanding? I do remember when you criticized Hillary for not having stamina. Now, I guess, you’re going to try to prove that you do have stamina.

Here are some tips: golf is not cardiovascular exercise, unless you’re carrying your own clubs. Nor is Tweeting, although you may ultimately develop soreness of the thumbs. Although you would do well to run spell-check before hitting “send,” that is not really running for exercise. Closing the door of the Oval Office so that your Attorney General cannot hear your appeal to the FBI director to drop the investigation of Michael Flynn is not exercise either. Yes, even if you slammed the door 100 times in a row, that would not count as real exercise. Reaching for Melania’s hand is not exercise either. Sure, I know that you had to walk all the way from the plane on that glaringly hot red carpet without help, but that’s not exercise either.

So, Mr. Trump, what are you going to do about this situation? Warren Harding, you know, died of a heart attack in his first term. You don’t want that to happen to you, do you?

    Here are more tips:

1.Take a great long hike along the rivers damaged irrevocably by mining waste. On your hike, why don’t you put your hand in the water and imagine trying to swim in the filth? Or, you may decide not to imagine; you may even go for a swim. But wait: that would endanger your health, too, wouldn’t it? “More than 40 percent of West Virginia’s rivers are too polluted to pass simple water-quality safety thresholds. They are too polluted to be safely used for drinking water or recreation, or to support healthy aquatic life.” This, according to Appalachian Mountain Advocates.

    2. Instead of using a pen to sign your executive orders, why don’t you hold off until you     can use a 20-pound weight with an ink-point attached? That will build up your arm strength and save a lot of the citizens of this great country a great deal of trouble in the meantime.

    3. When the evidence of your complicity with Russia’s interference in our election is amassed, you can get great exercise by moving the boxes of documents and tapes back and forth among the various investigative bodies.

So, I guess there are a variety of ways for you to build up your stamina, sir. I encourage you to use these that I have recommended and look for others as well.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

  • Responding to a White House “1600 Daily” Email

    May 16, 2017

    May 16, 2017

    Dear Mr. Trump,

As responsible citizens pray and patiently wait for your impeachment, I am pressed to respond to your recent “1600 Daily” email, which I received because I asked to be fed these White House loony-tune missives when I posted letters to you. Your most recent “1600 daily” makes claims about what the press has allegedly said that are patently misleading.

First, you quoted The Hill as stating that “Trump visited the U.S. Capitol earlier Monday to pay tribute to all law enforcement officers and gave remarks at an event held on the west lawn of the building.” – (emphasis in original). The Hill did note your visit and remarks, but the quoted statement does not appear in the article you cited, and The Hill certainly did not emphasize anything. These are not The Hill’s remarks and emphasis, but your own. Talk about “fake news.”

Second, you quote Real Clear Politics as stating: “Congress has taken the first step to keep our promise of repealing and replacing Obamacare. But we can’t stop now. We’re not done working to save our constituents from this disastrous law and give doctors and patients – not government – control over health care decisions.” – However, these were not the remarks of Real Clear Politics, as you suggested, but those of Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), writing an opinion piece, not a piece of political reporting.

Third, you quote Reuters, again adding your own emphasis. “A private gauge of U.S. home builder sentiment unexpectedly rose in May to its second strongest level since the housing bust nearly a decade ago, as the existing supply of homes remained tight. “ Yes, Reuters did write this, but said nothing whatsoever to imply that this positive sign had anything to do with your presidency.

Does your attempt to deceive the American public never end? How stupid do you think we are?

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger

  • To the man who thinks he is God

    Dear Mr. Trump,

So I understand that, in your commencement address at Liberty University, you trumpeted the idea that “We worship God” here in the United States, unless you meant that only the graduates you were addressing worship God. I wonder.

    Who is this “we”?

Is it the man who bragged about assaulting women because he was famous and could get away with it, grabbing p***y whenever he could, hitting on married women? Is he the one who worships God?

Is it the man, perhaps, who hides his tax returns and business interests and payments from the Russians because he can get away with it – at least so far? Is he the one who worships God? I think, if so, it’s the God of Money.

Is it the man who wants to take health care away from millions and cause millions to die as a result? Is he the one who worships God? He worships himself. He thinks he must be God. He thinks that everyone at Liberty University worships him.

Is it the man who is a serial cheater on his wives? Is he the holier than thou man who worships God?

Disgust is too mild a word, sir, for the feelings you engender.

    Very truly yours,

    Bruce J. Berger
