Dear President Trump:
I waited for a few days without writing, just to see if you would get better. Alas, I see no evidence of that.
I see, instead, that you are livid because of truthful information about your White House leaking out. You have even sent your press secretary, Sean Spicer, to spy on the phones of the people who operate the office of presidential communications, hoping that you’ll find evidence of those brave Americans who are willing to tell the truth about you and your operation. These second-grade operations are doomed to failure, Mr. President, because you cannot censor what people think. You cannot control the minds of men and women who still love our democracy and are sick with the way you and Pence and Bannon and Miller are trying to tear it apart. So, please pass along the following message to the people who work for you.
Keep up the brave and essential work of getting the truth out to us (within the confines of the law)! Remember that, without Deep Throat and the Washington Post, America would never have learned of Nixon’s perfidy, and that your boss, Mr. Trump, has already gone beyond anything that Nixon could ever have dreamed of. Remember that the First Amendment’s promises of freedom of the press are meaningless unless the press gets the information it needs to tell the truth.
Thank you, Mr. President, for passing on this important message to the people who work – not for you – but for all Americans, even those Americans – the vast majority – whom you despise.
Yours in hopeful expectation of the truth getting out some day (as much truth as the laws allow),
Bruce J. Berger
Dear Mr. President,
I believe your so-called crack-down on undocumented people in this country is ill-advised and mean-spirited. That vast majority of these people work hard and pay taxes. They do not constitute a threat to the United States.
Oh, but your supporters say, “They broke the law!” Maybe, but as the chief executive you have the power and responsibility to enforce the law sensibly. How does it help me if you break up families? How does it help our country if you, e.g., send away the main wage earner, depriving his children of a father (or mother) and the love and guidance a parent can supply? We’ll be so much safer then?
As you pursue these horrendous policies, consider yourself the first Anti-Family president of the United States.
Yours in horror,
Bruce J. Berger

Dear Mr. President,
I see that you have begun your campaign for the 2020 election. I must say that this is overly hasty, since so far you have accomplished nothing noteworthy in your administration except damaging our government, our people, our environment. The crowds still cheering for you are not cheering for what you’ve done, but cheering because they want to succumb to totalitarianism. Remember how those German crowds cheered Hitler? So many Germans – enough to put him office – thought he was the greatest and couldn’t see that they were cheering the destruction of their country. Indeed, they were not only cheering, they were making it happen, every Sieg Heil! putting them a step closer to the horrible end.
You claim that you are “the least anti-Semitic person” in the world? If the destruction of six million Jews by the Third Reich weren’t the world’s greatest tragedy, your comments would be laughable. Time and time again you’ve had an opportunity to reject anti-Semitism, to say that it is absolutely wrong, to say that it is an abomination, to say that it is contrary to every worthy ideal of America, and time and time again you fail to do so. We know why. It’s because the white supremacists who make up so much of your cheering crowds wouldn’t stand for it. It’s because Steve Bannon and Steve Miller wouldn’t stand for it.
How come you have no guts to the do the right, Mr. President?
If I were you, I’d suspend my campaign for 2020 immediately and take time to think about the damage I was presently doing to our great country and to humanity.
Yours in great sorrow,
Bruce J. Berger
Dear Mr. President,
I see that things are going badly for you right now, what with General Flynn having to resign. I know it was either Flynn or Pence, and the embarrassment of having your Vice President resign – because you did not inform him that he had been lied to – was too great to bear, so you made a wise decision telling Flynn he was done.
But you are compounding the harm to yourself and to the country by continuing to lie about Russia’s involvement in helping you get elected. Why not just admit what happened and take the consequences? We teach our children to admit when they did wrong and take the consequences. We don’t teach them to pile on lie after lie after lie. We teach them to be good citizens. Shouldn’t the President of the United States be the best citizen? Shouldn’t he or she be an example for our children and grandchildren?
You’re a minority president, i.e., the vast majority of voters did not want you as president, so you should be trying to prove the nay-sayers wrong. You should be trying to demonstrate exemplary behavior. You don’t seem to be trying to do that at all, however. You seem to think that, if lying got you where you are, lying will keep you there. You’re wrong, sir, just as President Nixon was wrong. He was the last president who threatened our democracy, and you are following in his footsteps, if not exceeding them.
Yours with a prayer,
Bruce J. Berger

Dear Mr. President:
How disheartened I am that you use racial epithets against Sen. Warren. My dismay does not arise because she, in particular, is the target. It arises because you would use racial epithets against anyone, regardless of whether they are a political enemy. But that she disagrees with your policies and is willing to speak out to express her disagreement, as a senator is bound to do by her oath of office to uphold the Constitution, makes it doubling troubling that you use racial slurs in a juvenile attempt to demean her. Your behavior is disgusting.
We know that you hate women, minorities, Jews (please don’t tell me your daughter is a Jew, because it doesn’t make any difference), Muslims, Mexicans, immigrants, the children of immigrants, and Native Americans as well. You hate and hate and hate and, sadly, you drive others just like you to open up about their own hatred. You remind us of your hatred every day. You hate the environment. You hate civil rights. You hate public education. You hate the First Amendment. You hate the Constitution. You hate and hate and hate, and you have made the Oval Office your Command Central for your hatred.
Sir, please stop!
Bruce J. Berger
Dear Mr. President:
Your every move strikes me as antithetical to the values that make America great. You despise diversity and truth. You despise equal rights. You despise good manners, fairness, keeping your word to the people who work for you, and the meaning of language.
So you’ve appointed an Attorney General who would love to nothing more than deprive people of color of their right to vote. You’ve appointed a Secretary of Education who wants to destroy public schools, which will degenerate, but what do you care, Mr. President? Your grandchildren won’t have to attend them. You’ve appointed someone to head EPA who will be happy to let the environment degenerate, because the wealthy and privileged think they will still find protected places in which to lord it over those less fortunate. You’ve encouraged by your behavior and language hundreds of attacks against mosques, and synagogues, and Muslims, and Hispanics, and you turn up your nose and remain silent about these because that’s your plan: to wink to the white hooded KKK’ers and white supremacists who made your candidacy successful. Ultimately, your aim – and the aims of the close advisors easily pushing their ideas into your brain — is to destroy all of the institutions of the United States. You would be happy, indeed, to be the last President of the United States.
You’re on a good start. Good from your point of view, but not from the point of view of American values. Good for the destruction of all we love, bad for those whom we love.
Yours in distress about the future,
Bruce J. Berger
Dear Mr. President:
If a writer sends a letter – and you ignore it – does the letter really exist? If millions of American citizens protest against your policies and edicts – and you ignore them –do they really exist? If tens of millions people around the world are horrified by your bigotry, by your ignorance of world history, by your mad devotion to follow the infamous rhetoric of Adolf Hitler– but you ignore them, do they really exist? I am sure you feel that these letters, the American citizens who oppose you, the millions around the world whom you horrify are not real, not deserving of your care, not worthy to be considered.
Now it seems that you intend to fire every federal employee you can fire if they dare to challenge your unconstitutional actions. Just like Nazi Germany, where the rule of law ended when Hitler took over and the only law was what Hitler said. Our federal and state employees – including all law enforcement authorities – have an obligation to obey the constitution, not to blindly follow orders. “I was just following orders” was the excuse of the likes of Adolf Eichmann. You link yourself through your actions to the worst people we have known in recent history.
You need to resign, Mr. President, not only for your own sanity but for the sake of our country and our lives.
Yours in great dismay,
Bruce J. Berger
